Senior Fellow Rebecca Kelly Slaughter appeared on The New Yorker’s Political Scene podcast on October 9 for a conversation about curbing public corruption. Speaking with hosts Susan Glasser, Evan Osnos, and Jane Mayer, Slaughter, a former commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, argued that criminal prosecution may not be the most effective way to reduce profiteering in the public sphere.
“We have to change the calculus so that violating the law is not profitable,” she said, “and that means thinking not just about criminal sanctions, but civil recovery.”
